We had a small but scintillating group Thursday [4.10.08]!
Thank you to Clarisse Colvard for an amazing and very French
spread and to Alexandra McGovern for leading discussion on
Suite Francaise, by Irene Nemirovsky. This stunning book
contains two narratives, one fictional and the other a
fragmentary, factual account of how the fiction came into being.'
Suite Francaise' itself consists of two novellas portraying life in
France from June 4, 1940, as German forces prepare to invade
Paris, through July 1, 1941, when some of Hitler's occupying
troops leave France to join the assault on the Soviet Union. At
the end of the volume, a series of appendices and a biographical
sketch provide, among other things, information about the author
of the novellas.
Our next book group is Thursday, May 8th at 7:30 at Kristina
Voorhies Legan's home - 3031 Piedmont. Robbie Baird will lead
discussion of White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Copies of the book
are available. Please let me know if you need one. |

MESITA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Principal Ferris is grateful to all our neighbors for their patience during
the building process. The playground is close to completion and
should be finished by mid-May. There will be a dedication ceremony
for the new school sometime in May; the date and time will soon be
announced. People have asked about the school zone lights. They are
usually on from 7:30-8:15am and 2:30-3:30pm. The congestion on
Stanton will be alleviated as soon as the construction is completely
finished; mid-May is the target date. Congratulations to Mrs. Dayoub,
one of our kindergarten teachers, who has been named one of the top
finalists for 'Teacher of the Year' for EPISD. Lastly, there will be a
Scholastic Book Fair in the new auditorium Tuesday, May 13th thru
Friday, May 16th.
WIGGS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Principal Teran expressed unbounded pride of his staff and students for
the notable year this has been. Everyone seems to have done their best
to succeed in academics, music, art, and sports. Wiggs children have
won their 4th consecutive Academic [UIL] in math, spelling, reading,
music, and acting. Additionally, one breathtaking event which took
place on April 11th was the annual Stargazing party. The District
planetarium brought telescopes to the football field and everyone
attending was able to view Jupiter and Mars, as well as a satellite
fly-by. In attendance this year were a record 500 students and parents.
Besides all our Academic success our football and volleyball teams are
again this year's District Champions. Furthermore, our soccer team
was undefeated this season.

Billy was a resident of the Kern area, and a long-time advocate of preserving open and wild space within our city. During his lifetime, Billy enjoyed the arroyo and donated a lot of time and money to its maintenance and protection -- he was instrumental in making the arroyo a city park. Billy died in 2006, but his legacy will remain for all of us in Kern who enjoy
Billy Rogers Arroyo Park, and all of its natural wonder. The rock edifice which memorializes Billy is designed with him in mind: it is not intrusive to the wildscape, and Billy always appreciated a well made rock wall. The park was dedicated with a short ceremony Saturday, May 3rd at the east end of the park. |
